SSA Nelson is part of the SSA NZL group. SSA is a national provider of specialist stevedoring services which handles every type of cargo, with a proven commitment to customer service, employee relations and providing a safe and healthy workplace.

We are currently looking for an experienced Stevedore to join our Nelson team!

The role of the stevedore is to assist with the loading and unloading of vessels, ensuring cargo is loaded and discharged efficiently and safely. This involves working as part of a team either on the wharf or on the vessel. You will be required to follow instructions about how to work in and around cargoes.

The roles start off with a guarantee of 32/7, with a view of moving to increased hours.

If you have experience with mobile plant (including digger driving), lifting equipment and working with log cargoes, we definitely want to hear from you!

Experience in Stevedoring or Port Operations is desirable, however, we will consider people who have a good work record, a commitment to safe working practices, a willingness to learn, and have a great attitude towards work.

Essential requirements for the position are:

  • A current full driver's license
  • A good level of literacy
  • A good level of physical fitness
  • The ability to work at heights
  • As a 24/7 business, we require all stevedores to work shifts and to be able to work weekends as well.

We also have an outport model, so if any SSA business unit requires labour, you may be required to travel throughout NZ.

To be considered for this opportunity you will need to pass a pre-employment medical, pre-employment drug & alcohol test.

Please Note: Due to operations being Port based, all new employees who are part of the boarder workforce (port-side roles) that are covered by the current Public Health Order (PHO), will be required to have had at least their first vaccination dosage BEFORE starting with SSA NZL. The second dosage must be completed within 35 days of the first. If you are offered a role covered by this PHO, you will be entitled to receive a first priority vaccination.

You also need to be aware all permanent and casuals are required to adhere to our Drug & Alcohol Policy that does include random testing. You will be required to work at heights while employed as a Stevedore.
